Why pro-life Catholic intellectuals are wrong by George Weigel
When people think of what a Democrat stands for, being pro-life is not on the ticket. One would expect that since Senator Obama is running for president as a democrat, that he would be pro-choice, but apparently this is not the case. Obama believes that the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case that obliterated the abortion law of all 50 states was "rightly decided". Obama's support for Roe was his stated reason for opposing Illionois' bills hoped to provide legal protection for children who survived an abortion. Obama's goal to support the federal Freedom of Choice Art (FOCA), which strips Catholic doctors of "conscience clause" protections that are in current state laws, "would put thousands of Catholic physicians in jeopardy". The question is, why do Catholic professors support a presidential candidate that "scoffed" at voucher programs that would allow poor parents in inner cities to send their kids to Catholic schools-these schools are actually some of the of few urban schools that work?
